Are Effective Teachers Like Good Parents? Teaching Styles and Student Adjustment in Early Adolescence.
Wentzel, Kathryn R.
Child Development, v73 n1 p287-301 Jan-Feb 2002
Examined the utility of parent socialization models for understanding effects of middle school teachers on student adjustment. Found that five teaching dimensions (modeling of motivation, and parenting dimensions of control, maturity demands, democratic communication, and nurturance) predicted student motivation, social behavior, and achievement. High expectations predicted students' goals and interests, and negative feedback predicted poor performance and behavior. (JPB)
