Parenting Dimensionality and Typology in a Disadvantaged, African American Sample: A Cultural Variance Perspective.
Weis, Robert
Journal of Black Psychology, v28 n2 p142-73 May 2002
Examined the parenting cognitions of single, adolescent, disadvantaged, African American mothers. Maternal reports highlighted three parenting dimensions: warmth, control, and anger. Mother-child dyads were periodically observed and interviewed. Mothers were classified as dismissive, permissive, authoritative, or affectionate-distressed. Dismissive and distressed parents exhibited the least optimal behavior, and their children displayed the poorest outcomes at 2-year followup. (Contains references.) (SM)
