Language Learner Motivation: Comparing French Class Attitudes of Scottish and Canadian Secondary Pupils.
Diffey, N.; Morton, L. L.; Wolfe, A.; Tuson, J.
Scottish Educational Review, v33 n2 p169-82 Nov 2001
A study examined motivation among 150 students studying French as a foreign language in a Scottish and a Canadian secondary school. Canadian teachers' tendency towards control fostered extrinsic student motivation, whereas Scottish students were more amenable to intrinsic motivation. Successful foreign language teaching lies in conveying social and cultural meaning to the endeavor. (Contains 22 references.) (TD)
