Racial, Ethnic, and Cultural Differences in Responding to Distinctiveness and Discrimination on Campus: Stigma and Common Group Identity.
Dovidio, John F.; Gaertner, Samuel L.; Niemann, Yolanda Flores; Snider, Kevin
Journal of Social Issues, v57 n1 p167-88 2001
Examines how group membership can moderate or diffuse feelings of stigmatization for racial/ethnic minorities. Research demonstrates that the development of a common group identity can diffuse stigmatization effects, improve intergroup attitudes, and enhance institutional satisfaction and commitment among college students and faculty. Strategies to address the effects of stigmatization must consider different values and racial/ethnic identities. (SM)
