Racist Experiences and Health Outcomes: An Examination of Spirituality as a Buffer.
Bowen-Reid, Terra L.; Harrell, Jules P.
Journal of Black Psychology, v28 n1 p18-36 Feb 2002
Examined whether perception of racist experiences would predict differently for self-reported health symptoms compared to an objective health measure (cardiovascular reactivity) among African Americans, noting the influence of spirituality. Perceived racist experiences and racial stress negatively related to health symptoms and inversely related to cardiovascular responses. Spirituality significantly moderated between racial stress and negative psychological health outcomes. (Contains references.) (SM)
