Schools, Achievement, and Inequality: A Seasonal Perspective.
Alexander, Karl L.; Entwisle, Doris R.; Olson, Linda S.
Educational Evaluation and Policy Analysis, v23 n2 p171-91 Sum 2001
Studied socioeconomic differences in children's learning over the school year and the summer months using data for a representative sample of urban school children (final sample, 368). Findings show that the increase in the achievement gap over the primary grades can be traced mainly to the out-of-school environment. The seasonal pattern of achievement suggests an important compensatory role for schooling. (SLD)
