Developing a Rationale for Multicultural Education in Rural Appalachia.
Hillis, Michael R.; Ralston, Elizabeth
Rural Educator, v23 n2 p7-12 Win 2001
Because of their ethnic/racial homogeneity, Appalachian schools often see multicultural education as irrelevant. Teacher education must link the oppression of Appalachia with that of more visible minority groups; show how knowledge is subjective; and emphasize that true national unity results from honoring diversity. Teachers will then realize that multicultural education is viable and relevant for rural communities. (Contains 26 references.) (TD)
