Relation of Early Menarche to Depression, Eating Disorders, Substance Abuse, and Comorbid Psychopathology among Adolescent Girls.
Stice, Eric; Presnell, Katherine; Bearman, Sarah Kate
Developmental Psychology, v37 n5 p608-19 Sep 2001
Used interview data from a community study to test whether early menarche partially accounts for increased depression, eating pathology, substance abuse, and comorbid psychopathology among adolescent girls. Found that menarche prior to 11.6 years related to elevated depression and substance abuse. Findings support assertion that early menarche is a general risk factor for psychopathology among adolescent girls. (Author/KB)
