Justice and Utility in the Classroom: An Attributional Analysis of the Goals of Teachers' Punishment and Intervention Strategies.
Reyna, Christine; Weiner, Bernard
Journal of Educational Psychology, v93 n2 p309-19 Jun 2001
Teacher reactions to student academic performance may have utilitarian goals, whereas others are punitive. This study investigated these reactions, as well as situations that determine which strategies are used. Controllable causes of failure give rise to punitive and retributive strategies, whereas lack of controllability elicits utilitarian responses. Implications are discussed in terms of student motivation and classroom performance. (BF)
