Moving from the ESL Classroom into the Mainstream: An Investigation of English Language Anxiety in Mexican Girls.
Pappamihiel, N. Eleni
Bilingual Research Journal, v25 n1-2 p31-38 Win-Spr 2001
A study examined English language anxiety in 178 immigrant Mexican American middle school students attending southwestern U.S. schools. There was no gender difference in anxiety in English-as-a-second-language classes, but girls demonstrated significantly more English language anxiety in their mainstream classes. Recommendations include affective assessments prior to mainstreaming and group activities in which girls feel safer. (TD)
