Describes some origins of teachers' negative perceptions of parents and lack of parents' involvement in their children's education. Asserts that an effective partnership between parents and schools requires an understanding of the history of, need for, and barriers to parental involvement. Proposes solutions to barriers inhibiting parent involvement and notes that school-family partnerships require continued effort. (SD)
