Presents observations of two community-sponsored summer programs in which storytelling was used as a vehicle for expanding children's existing oral language and developing their literacy abilities. Describes how children first participated as attentive listeners to the professional storyteller, then became creative retellers, then used story mapping. Notes the children quickly adapted to stories as a vehicle for active learning. (SR)
