Parent' Interactions with Their First-Grade Children during Storybook Reading and Relations with Subsequent Home Reading Activity and Reading Achievement.
Baker, Linda; Mackler, Kirsten; Sonnenschein, Susan; Serpell, Robert
Journal of School Psychology, v39 n5 p415-38 Sep-Oct 2001
Examines parents' verbal and affective interactions with their first-grade children during shared storybook reading and how these interactions relate to growth in children's reading activity and achievement. Results reveal that affective quality was an important contributor to children's reading of challenging materials in third grade but not to their reading achievement. (Contains 30 references, 6 tables, and 2 appendixes.) (GCP)
