The Effect of Cultural Congruence and Higher Order Questioning on the Reading Enjoyment and Comprehension of Ethnic Minority Students.
Rickford, Angela
Journal of Education for Students Placed at Risk, v6 n4 p357-87 2001
Examined the effect of culturally relevant narratives and strategically constructed questions on the reading enjoyment and comprehension of minority students. Data from a study of urban middle school students indicated that weak readers were not necessarily weak thinkers. When afforded the opportunity through culturally congruent literature and strategic questioning, students demonstrated critical and original thought. Contains tables and references.(SM)
