When Science Is Strangely Alluring: Interrogating the Masculinist and Heteronormative Nature of Primary School Science.
Letts, Will
Gender and Education, v13 n3 p261-74 Sep 2001
Discusses how science structures, and is structured by, norms of heterosexual masculinity and how those norms comprise a hidden curriculum, examining empirical research on curricular and classroom materials used in school science and describing how they are deployed pedagogically. Suggests that this results in impoverished experiences for students and recommends the introduction of a critical science literacy into elementary science education.
