Examines the educational and professional accomplishments of black women in the early-to-mid-20th century, when the number of black women earning college degrees surpassed that of black men earning degrees. Traces the historical conditions influencing college graduation rates and suggests links between higher education and occupational opportunity to explain the significance of the growth of college graduation rates.
