Middle-Class African American Parents' Conceptions of Parenting in Early Adolescence.
Smetana, Judith; Chuang, Susan
Journal of Research on Adolescence, v11 n2 p177-98 2001
Examined conceptions of parenting among middle-class African American parents of early adolescents. Found that parents strongly endorsed setting firm limits. Mothers rated limiting adolescents' behavior as more important than permitting or encouraging independence. Mothers of younger adolescent females viewed limits as more important than mothers of older females. Mothers encouraged independence more for younger than older early adolescent males. (Author/KB)
