Examined impact of teaching phonemic awareness by embedding sound talk within meaningful literacy experiences of shared reading and writing in small groups of 5- and 6-year-olds 3 times weekly for 7 weeks. Found that this instruction led to gains in phonemic awareness compared to no treatment. Treatment-specific improvement was evident for first sound identification, last sound identification, and sound segmentation. (Author/KB)
