Problem-Solving in a Case-based Course: Strategies for Facilitating Coached Expertise.
Stepich, Donald A.; Ertmer, Peggy A.; Lane, Molly M.
Educational Technology Research and Development, v49 n3 p53-69 2001
Proposes the use of specific coaching strategies to facilitate student use of expert-like problem-solving strategies while analyzing and solving instructional design case studies. At two universities, 37 students analyzed 6-10 case studies in class and in online discussions. Findings suggested primary influences on the incidence of expert performance were more external than internal and more aptly characterized as "coached expertise." Descriptions of coding categories are appended. (AEF)
