Explored between-gender invariance on the NEO PI-R Neuroticism scale (Costa and McCrae, 1992) with a sample of 1,056 undergraduates. Several items displayed significant differential item functioning (DIF), but it was difficult to associate DIF with specific aspects of item content, and findings indicate that item-level DIF does not necessarily make a difference when the scale is considered as a whole.
