Examined educational problems and characteristics of low-income parents and children, investigating literacy-related difficulties mothers encountered when attempting to help their seventh-grade students complete homework-like science tasks. Mothers were overdependent on printed directions and could not meet the task demands. This may have been related to limited literacy levels resulting in mediational constraints. Remedial strategies are discussed. (SM)
