Interactions between Natural Language and Mathematical Structures: The Case of "Wordwalking".
Mitchell, Jean M.
Mathematical Thinking and Learning, v3 n1 p29-52 2001
In the course of solving relatively routine word problems, 7th grade students made a substitution for a word or phrase in the original problem statement. This practice is referred to as "wordwalking". Invokes the relative ambiguity of natural language and the precision of mathematical expressions to explain the dynamics of wordwalking.
