Phonemic Awareness and Reading Skill in Hyperlexic Children: A Longitudinal Study.
Sparks, Richard L.
Reading and Writing: An Interdisciplinary Journal, v14 n3-4 p333-60 Jun 2001
Considers how children with hyperlexia who learn to read spontaneously before the age of five are impaired in reading and listening comprehension but have word recognition skills well above their measured cognitive and linguistic abilities. Reevaluates three adolescent hyperlexic students eight years after an initial evaluation. Finds levels of phonemic awareness were low and not commensurate with word reading skill. (SG)
