Modern Traditions? British Muslim Women and Academic Achievement.
Ahmad, Fauzia
Gender and Education, v13 n2 p137-52 Jun 2001
Interviewed British Muslim women of South Asian origin regarding their motivations for entering higher education. Women increasingly viewed higher education as a necessary asset for maintaining and gaining social prestige. Motivations included parental encouragement, independence, and personal satisfaction. Respondents continually negotiated and renegotiated their cultural, religious, and personal identities, and those processes operated in complex, sometimes contradictory ways. (SM)
