Experiences of the Relation between Teaching and Research: What Do Academics Value?

Interviews with a small number of academic staff who had previously expressed strong views on the teaching-research relationship revealed substantial variation in their experiences of the relationship. Five qualitatively different experiences of the teaching-research relationship were evident, ranging from incompatibility, to transmission of new research knowledge, to a symbiotic relationship. (EV)
