Investigates effectiveness of three training programs for English as a Foreign Language university students in reading and listening comprehension. Finds that: students who learned rhetorical patterns of written expository texts and text mapping strategies demonstrated better comprehension of lectures than students who performed other activities; and overt teaching of phonological features signaling macro-units of discourse had a facilitating effect on comprehension.
