Taking Dictation: The Emergence of Writing Programs and the Cultural Contradictions of Composition Teaching.
Strickland, Donna
College English, v63 n4 p457-79 Mar 2001
Maps out two simultaneous and mutually reinforcing phenomena: (1) the material conditions that have given rise to hierarchically arranged writing programs; and (2) the attendant cultural values that have made possible the feminization as well as the racialization of composition teaching. Argues that writing programs have emerged by way of divisions in labor, separating mental labor from mechanical labor. (SG)
