Counselors need to develop age-sensitive communication skills based on research findings concerning developmental changes due to age. This article presents a listening-responding technique outlining six principles that can be applied in a wide variety of situations. These principles are governed by the intention to preserve self esteem and to clarify the needs of elderly patients. (Author/MKA)
