Immigrant Latinos' Cultural Model of Literacy Development: An Evolving Perspective on Home-School Discontinuities.
Reese, Leslie; Gallimore, Ronald
American Journal of Education, v108 n2 p103-34 Feb 2000
Examined Hispanic immigrant parents' cultural models and practices of children's literacy development, discussing home-school discontinuities. Periodic interviews with parents indicated that most shared a common view of literacy development that affected their structuring of everyday activities for children. Influenced by shared experiences in their native societies, parents considered reading something that is learned, through repeated practice, after school begins. (SM)
