Expresiones de Modalidad en una Situacion de Contacto: "Deber (De)" Vs. "Tener Que" en el Espanol Hablado en Houston (Expressions of Modals in a Contact Situation in the Spanish Spoken in Houston).
Fairclough, Marta
Southwest Journal of Linguistics, v19 n2 p19-30 Dec 2000
Examined an aspect of modality in the Spanish spoken in the Houston, Texas community. Demonstrates that semantic-pragmatic variation and change are taking place and affecting the forms of "deber (de) and "tener que" in their deontic and epistemic modes. Interviewed Mexicans and Mexican-Americans in Spanish. Analyses show an increased use of "tener que" in the speech of bilinguals. (Author/VWL)
