Powerful Pedagogy for African American Students: A Case of Four Teachers.
Howard, Tyrone C.
Urban Education, v36 n2 p179-202 Mar 2001
Examines the pedagogical practices that four urban, African American elementary teachers used with African American students. Findings reveal teaching practices consistent with various norms espoused by African American students in a manner termed culturally relevant. Three of the major pedagogical themes are discussed: holistic instructional strategies, culturally consistent communicative competencies, and skill-building strategies to promote academic success.
