Cultural Practices in American Indian Prevention Programs.
Sanchez-Way, Ruth; Johnson, Sandie
Juvenile Justice, v7 n2 p20-30 Dec 2000
Describes effective substance abuse prevention programs created by American Indians that combine cultural components with other proven prevention strategies. Components of successful cultural interventions are family, not school, administration; a focus on peer clusters rather than individuals or entire peer groups; incorporation of spirituality, ceremony, and ritual; and community-wide healing through the release of historical trauma.
