Mentoring but Not Being Mentored: Improving Student-to-Student Mentoring Programs To Attract Urban Youth to Teaching.
Sawyer, Richard D.
Urban Education, v36 n1 p39-59 Jan 2001
Examined a program which had adolescent, male, minority students mentor elementary students and encouraged them to consider teaching careers. Investigated how adolescents' perceptions intersected with elementary schools' structural constraints. Data from observations, interviews, and focus groups revealed the value to the mentors of their engagement with proteges, their indifference to indifferent school settings, and their rejection of teaching as a career.
