The Effect of Exercise on Body Satisfaction and Self-Esteem as a Function of Gender and Age.
Tiggemann, Marika; Williamson, Samantha
Sex Roles: A Journal of Research, v43 n1-2 p119-27 Jul 2000
Investigated the relationship between amount of exercise and psychological wellbeing, surveying people age 16-60 years. Women had lower body satisfaction and self-esteem than men. While there was generally a positive relationship between exercise and wellbeing, for women age 16-21 years, there was a significant negative relationship. Women exercised more for weight control and tone than men. (SM)
