The Economic Risk of Childhood in America: Estimating the Probability of Poverty across the Formative Years.
Rank, Mark R.; Hirschl, Thomas A.
Journal of Marriage and the Family, v61 n4 p1058-67 Nov 1999
Study used a set of life tables built from 25 waves of longitudinal data to estimate the proportion of children who will experience poverty. Life tables revealed that race, family structure, and parental education are causative factors. Determined that 69% of Black children, 81% of children in nonmarried households, and 63% of children whose household head has less than 12 years of education, will be touched by poverty. (Author/JDM)
