Correlates of Parenting Styles in Predominantly Working- and Middle-Class African American Mothers.
Bluestone, Cheryl; Tamis-LeMonda, Catherine S.
Journal of Marriage and the Family, v61 n4 p881-93 Nov 1999
Examines parenting practices of African American mothers (N=114) of children ages 5-12. Maternal education, socioeconomic status, childrearing history, and maternal depression differentially predicted child-centered parenting, reasoning, and mothers' tendencies to let situations go. Stresses importance of extending models of parenting determinants to underrepresented segments of African American families to study factors that contribute to parenting styles. (Author/JDM)
