This single case study examines the classroom perspective and personal practical knowledge of one middle school science teacher in an attempt to understand her world. Classroom elements characteristic of an expert teacher are discussed, including formation of a community of learners, encouragement of student responsibility, maintenance of an atmosphere of caring, and provision of opportunities for student success.
