An Examination of the Association of African American Mothers' Perceptions of Their Neighborhoods with Their Parenting and Adolescent Adjustment.
Taylor, Ronald D.
Journal of Black Psychology, v26 n3 p267-87 Aug 2000
Investigated links between African American mothers' perceptions of their urban neighborhoods and adjustment of their adolescents. Interview data indicated that important features of neighborhoods (crime, physical deterioration, and resource availability) measured through mothers' reports related to adolescent functioning and mothers' parenting practices. Reports of high crime, physical deterioration, and lack of resources related to lower self-reliance and self-esteem in adolescents. (SM)
