Videotapes showed that two algebra classes containing Hispanic students with limited English proficiency differed in the extent of mathematical communication by students. In the more successful classroom, students' mathematical communication developed in small-group discussions and later spread to the large-group setting; computers were also valuable for stimulating student discussion.
