A study that compared Israeli adolescents with mental retardation in special education schools (n=121) and in self-contained mainstreamed schools (n=189) with typical students (n=265) found students with mental retardation in special schools tended to have fewer friends than those in mainstreamed schools and felt lonelier than the other students.
