Rejects assumptions that women's mathematical abilities and attitudes relate to biological, psychological, and social factors, assuming that women make many decisions regarding mathematics. Challenges the assumption that within western culture, mathematical ability is an unequivocal good desired and sought by all. Examines characteristics shared by marked categories of people as deviant, arguing that the mathematically able share these characteristics. (SM)
