Viable Alternatives for Students with Disabilities: Exploring the Origins and Interpretations of LRE.
Crockett, Jean B.
Exceptionality, v8 n1 p43-60 1999-2000
Discussion of the principle of least restrictive environment (LRE) in the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) reviews sociopolitical, legal, and educational data. The article suggests that concerns about LRE placement have obscured the preeminent issue of free and appropriate instruction, another IDEA principle. Some principles of special education practice to guide program/placement teams are offered. (Contains extensive references.) (DB)
