Describes the experience of three U.S. mathematics teachers while implementing a new high school curriculum (Core-Plus Mathematics Project) during the 1994-95 academic year. Teachers renegotiated where mathematical authority should lie--with the teacher, the students, or both. Shared mathematical authority emphasizes conceptual understanding of ideas.
