Astonishment and Understanding: On the Problem of Explanation in Journalism.
New Jersey Journal of Communication, v7 n1 p44-64 Spr 1999
Clarifies the nature and definition of explanatory journalism. Distinguishes journalistic explanation from news analysis, interpretation, and investigation. Reveals, by using rhetorical analysis, that explanatory journalism within the journalistic profession is both praised and prized, evaded and reviled. Aims to set a clearer foundation for explanatory journalism, since it remains essential to journalism's "enlightenment function." (SC)
