The Influence of Education Context and Beliefs on the Teaching Behavior of African American Mothers.
Harris, Yvette R.; Terrel, Denise; Allen, Gordon
Journal of Black Psychology, v25 n4 p490-503 Nov 1999
Investigated the influence of maternal education level, context, and maternal beliefs on African American mothers' teaching behaviors, observing mothers teaching their preschoolers memory tasks. Data from preschoolers' test scores and surveys of the mothers indicated that maternal teaching varied significantly by education level and context. Findings show several maternal strategies predict preschoolers' mastery of information, but few maternal beliefs are linked to teaching behaviors. (SM)
