Reviews the evolution of existing debates over international achievement comparisons with emphasis on some of the Third International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) responses relevant to educational practitioners. Highlights technical issues in developing free-response items, conducting curriculum analyses, and evaluating videotape findings to penetrate potentially overlooked aspects of TIMSS.
