A Preliminary Investigation into the Effect of Grammatical Cohesive Devices--Their Absence and Their Misuse--on Native Speaker Comprehension of Non-Native Speaker Speech and Writing.
Koshik, Irene
Issues in Applied Linguistics, v10 n1 p3-25 Jun 1999
Investigates native speakers' (NS) perceptions of coherence and comprehensibility of nonnative speakers' writing and talk that lacks or misuses grammatical cohesive devices. NS readers of NNS texts with missing cohesive devices assumed coherence and imposed coherence on the text by adding grammatical cohesive devices missing in the original, making implicit semantic relationships explicit. Miscomprehension resulted when underlying semantic relationships were not retrievable from other sources. (Author/VWL)
