Speech and Phonological Characteristics of Individual Children with a History of Tracheostomy.
Kertoy, Marilyn K.; Guest, Christine M.; Quart, Ellen; Lieh-Lai, Mary
Journal of Speech, Language, and Hearing Research, v42 n3 p621-35 Jun 1999
This study examined the speech production and phonological skills of six children (ages, 2:8 to 6:8) who had undergone tracheostomy before age 8 months. The study found slow development of sound acquisition, vowel production, and the distinction between voiced and voiceless stops for some of the children. Excessive use of inappropriate phonological processes was the most prevalent speech-production problem. (Author/DB)
