African American Scholars and Parents Cannot Blame Current Harsh Physical Punishment of Black Males on Slavery: A Response to "Cultural Interpretations of Child Discipline: Voices of African American Scholars".
Raymond, Henry J.; Jones, Fred; Cooke, Vanessa
Family Journal: Counseling and Therapy for Couples and Families, v6 n4 p279-86 Oct 1998
Current research strongly refutes assertions that nonspanking methods do not work well with African-American children. Autocratic childrearing is no longer effective. Hitting children does not instill confidence or courage, but supports poor self-concepts, builds desire for revenge, and fosters violence. Data is presented to support this view. (Author/EMK)
