Without Slang and Idioms, Students Are "In the Dark!"
Burke, David
ESL Magazine, v1 n5 p20-23 Sep-Oct 1998
Nonnative English speakers will have great difficulty understanding most American conversation and media if they do not know English slang and idioms. This article explains the importance of teaching nonstandard English, notes that slang is used by all classes of people, suggests that it is acceptable to use slang in business, and discusses whether teachers should teach off-color words.
